Duffy's Cut Presentation
Event Date:
Saturday, March 23, 2024 - 1:00pm to 2:30pm

At Duffy’s Cut, a railroad construction site in Chester County, Pennsylvania, fifty-seven Irish immigrant railroad workers died amid a cholera epidemic in the summer of 1832 and were buried in a mass grave. The events at Duffy’s Cut provide an example of the pervasive fear of contagion and of what historian Alan Kraut has called “the immigrant menace” in early America.

Join Bill Watson as he sheds light on an oft forgotten part of Chester County history. Bill is a Professor of History at Immaculata University in Malvern, Pennsylvania and is the founding member and director of the Duffy's Cut Project. He has spent the last 10 years directing the archeological dig at Duffy's Cut.
